Known Browser Issues

Since not all browsers are created equally, in spite of some set standards, there are a couple of issues that crop up from time to time. For reference, if you are not entirely sure what your current browser is, you can click on the About link on one of the RagPiano.com site pages for general information, or use the menu Help:About link for more detailed information. This site has been upgraded to XHTML and HTML5/CSS3 standards which should display equally in all compliant browsers. As of 2015 this includes the following minimum versions:

• Internet Explorer 9.0 or greater
• Microsoft Edge (Windows 10) 1.0 or greater
• Mozilla Firefox 34.0 or greater — Windows and Macintosh
• Google Chrome 35.0 or greater — Windows and Macintosh
• Apple Safari 5.1.7 or greater — Windows
• Apple Safari 10.7 or greater — Macintosh
• Opera 25 or Greater — Windows and Macintosh

Scrolling

With the exception of this help section, the site consists largely of a single page non-frame structure, due to advances in coding technology and the majority of users having gone to high speed connections. Because of the structure used for many pages on this site, where the menu is always available within a click at the top of the page, the necessary methodology results in the scrolling on some pages not working as expected on mobile devices, particularly Android and some older IOS. There is no perfect solution to this as of yet but a Mobile version of the site is under development, possibly even as an app. The overriding consideration of efficient page design for standard browsers needs to take precedent over this minor inconvenience. Firefox for either device will help to resolve some of these issues.

Secondary/Popup Windows

The use of code specifically to create popup windows has been avoided on this site. All of the windows that result from a link are secondary windows, which instead of a window tied directly to the main page are additional browser windows of their own, including those displaying sheet music covers and even Help. There are also links to other sites which open in a new browser window (or simply the next window in the chain on smartphone browsers). Just the same, some of these may occasionally be blocked by your browser's popup-blocker, or a third party toolbar such as Google or Yahoo. There is no phishing code of any type on this site, and no inadvertant advertising, so all secondary windows are safe. In most cases, holding down the Shift or Ctrl key while clicking will allow the secondary window to appear. You can also disable the block on some browsers or toolbars for a specific URL (www.ragpiano.com in this instance) so that no keys are necessary and no windows are blocked. This recommended for an overall better experience while visiting this site.
