Standard

A well-known song, generally not an instrumental originally, which is widely accepted and performed by musicians across several genres. A standard can be from almost any genre, and will be familiar to a large segment of the population as well as musicians. Examples range from For Me and My Gal, Honeysuckle Rose and Stardust to Hound Dog, Yesterday and Piano Man. Many such pieces are widely accepted as standards by most musicians, but some retain a nebulous status as a standard within a particular genre.
