GS MIDI

Acronym for General Standard or General Synthesizer MIDI, an extension of GM protocol designed by Roland for multi-timbral MIDI devices and sound cards that assigns a set list of instruments to common instrument patches, so that MIDI sequences will play expected instrument sounds on any GS compatible device without remapping. GS may also be applied through patch mapping capabilities of some computer operating systems, and there is a standard set of effects and alternate sounds.
