HD/DVD

Acronym for Toshiba's High Definition Digital Versatile Disc, a digital storage medium the size of a compact disc that can be recorded onto one time with 24 bit audio, high definition video or data, such as MP3 files. These units require a Toshiba-compliant player unlike players for standard CD and DVD discs, and are still a new consumer item, so recorders are scant. HD/DVDs support high-definition video resolutions of the 1024p HDTV standard as well as mutliple channels of high-resolution 24 bit sound of up to 7.1 channels.
